Thank You Scituate for Helping to Raise Over $25,000
for the Scituate Library Foundation!

More than 200 library supporters and friends attended the Foundation's Third Annual Spring Gala Dinner Dance at the Barker Tavern in Scituate Harbor May 27th.

The Creative Black Tie dinner celebrated The Grand Old Game of baseball, and true to the game, proved to be a sellout. The evening also included a Silent Auction for the first time, with an impressive list of sports memorabilia, tickets to Red Sox and Celtics games, as well as Boston College and Boston University hockey tickets. A number of local artisans also donated works of art and professional services to the auction.

Two items—a Bobby Doerr autographed baseball and a Tom Brady autographed jersey—were live-auctioned by former Red Sox great and Cy Young Award winner Jim Lonborg, who also served as the Honorary Chairman for the event. The winning bid for the Doerr baseball was $400, while the Brady jersey brought $825. Gala Chairperson Art Dunphy donated “the shirt of his back,” as he took off his Red Sox jersey and asked Lonborg to autograph it and then auction it off. It raised an additional $700, which Lonborg doubled when he offered a second jersey of his own to the runner-up bidder.

All told, the Silent and Live auctions earned the Foundation nearly $10,000.

Guest authors Leigh Montville, (Ted Williams: Biography of an American Hero) and Bill Littlefield (host of National Public Radio’s Only a Game, and author of Fall Clasics) were the main attraction of the evening. Art Dunphy interviewed the nationally-known sportswriters in what proved to be an interesting program.

J. Paul and Evelyn Finnegan were the recipients of the Foundation’s Virginia Heffernan Award for their generous support of the Scituate Library over the years. J. Paul is a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, while Evelyn is a highly-respected author of childrens books in her own right and the Childrens Librarian.
