Executive Overview:
The Scituate Town Library is in need of repairs, renovation and expansion to meet the needs of its growing constituency.
Library Construction Grant:
In 2010 the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) conducted a grant round for library construction. The Town of Scituate's proposal for a $12 million renovation and expansion of the existing library was accepted. The MBLC has granted $5 million towards the project with funding to be received no later than July 1, 2014.
Campaign Goals:
The library building project will be financed from three components:
A Library Construction Grant of $5 Million administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners
Private fundraising campaign of $5 Million
Town appropriation of $2 Million
Town Appropriation:
In order for the project to move forward, it must be approved at Town Meeting. An affirmative Town Meeting vote would be followed by a voter referendum on a debt-exclusion question.
Without this building project, over $1,500,000 in repairs and essential updates are required on an aging infrastructure. In other words, for an additional $500,000 Scituate will be acquiring a $12,000,000 asset.
See the Renovation Project Report for full details on current state of the Library building, scope of the project, grant information and funding needs.
